    Flexion (2019) für Altquerflöte Solo (Dauer ca 5'30'').

    It only seemed appropriate to compose a piece with movement that reflects what the human body must endure on a daily basis. Flexion is a medical term used by physical therapists and doctors to to describe bending, especially of a limb or joint. Joints can include the arms, legs, head, and even the hand and fingers.

    Flexion was commissioned by flutist Kelly Mollnow Wilson. Kelly Mollnow Wilson is a movement educator and Neurokinetic therapist, working with musicians to help them move and perform better. As a licensed Andover Educator, she teaches Body Mapping at Oberlin Conservatory and presents the course "What Every Musician Needs to Know About the Body."

    Like any developing flute skill, it is best to practice these techniques using scales, technical exercises, tone exercises, and etudes before jumping into pieces that use their most advanced forms. In addition to working on the etudes in this book, I recommend applying all of these techniques to daily practice of traditional tone and technique books such as Taffanel and Gauberts 17 Daily Exercises or Moyses De la Sonorité. Use these exercises as building blocks paired with the etudes in this book, and you will simultaneously improve your flute fundamentals while gaining the essential skills to tackle standards of the flute repertoire from the past 70 years.

    "Aimer, c'est agir" is believed to be the final words of French author and activist Victor Hugo. "Aimer, c'est agir" translates to "To love is to act". It was Hugo's life work to shine a spotlight on social injustice and work for change. In order to spark change, we must act - in order to truly love one another, we must get involved. Sometimes getting started is challenging and small, but over time momentum can build to create change not only for ourselves, but more importantly for others who desperately need it.

    Aimer, C'est Agir was commissioned by Matthieu Clavé for The Soundscape Series, a classical music concert series in three movements designed to inspire, enlighten, and educate. This piece was commissioned specifically for the final concert in the series called "New Works - Under Construction" which was a reflection on the progress accomplished in terms of social change, and the work ahead of us that remains. Like music, building bridges and changing habits require perseverance.

    The word salty has a few of meanings, but in this interpretation the title refers to the slang description of a crusty, rude, bitter, or annoyed person.

    Asphyxia (2016) für Flöte Solo (Dauer ca 5'30'').

    The word asphyxia is a medical term for a person's inability to breathe and lack of oxygen in the body. The symptoms of asphyxia can be light headedness or dizziness. Playing the flute is an instrument that requires plenty of air supplied by the performer. Many young flutists will complain about being dizzy when first learning to play the flute, but after a few weeks the young flutist adjust to the new demands and the dizziness subsides. A verteran flutist will seldom experience dizziness. However, when relentless extended techniques are added, new athletic demands can bring the most experienced to gasp for air.

    Asphyxia was commissioned by the Oklahoma Flute Society for the final round of the 2016 Collegiate Competition on April 1, 2016 at the University of Oklahoma at the Oklahoma Flute Society Flute Fair.

    Winner of the National Flute Association's 2017 Newly Published Music Competition in the Solo Flute Category.

    Honorable Mention for Flute New Music Consortium's 2016 Composition Competition in the solo category.

But in the hopes to give relief to the epic traffic problems of the city, Atlanta has recently taken many steps in encouraging people to walk to their destinations. Georgia State University, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, has taken steps to insure the safety of pedestrians by installing crosswalks that beep when it is safe to cross. However, you want to make sure you are out of the street when the beeping stops. Atlanta's hospitality does have its limits.

    Imperial Topaz (2018) für Kontrabassflöte Solo (Dauer ca 3'30'').

    Imperial Topaz was commissioned by Beth Devlin for her husband, Jay Devlin. Imperial topaz is the gemstone for the 23rd anniversary which the couple celebrated in 2018, when the piece was completed. The color of imperial topaz has been described as the color of the sun at sunset. In the 17th century, Russian tsars claimed exclusive rights to the gemstones mined in Russia which resulted in the gem being named imperial topaz. The piece is intended to be performed on contrabass flute, but could easily be performed on any of the low flutes or even the C flute.

  • "Smorgasbord" explores the different styles and textures a flutist can convey through the manipulation of the air stream. Through punching, clicks, bending, popping, fluttering, and even singing while playing, the flute can take on a metamorphosis of sound. The titles of the movements are analogous to a variety of textures found in food as well as the sounds of the flute. Through punches and aggressive attacks, the sound can be crunchy; though bending, it can be gelatinous; through pops, clicks and different embouchure shapes, it can be carbonated; with our friend the piccolo, singing while playing, and fluttering, it can sound fluffy. Certainly the flute has a "smorgasbord" of ingredients in the pantry that can be whipped up a delicious audio-culinary work.

    Unity für Flöte Solo (Dauer ca 3').

    Unity is dedicated to the composer's oldest sister, Gay Lynn, on her marriage to Peter. The piece was premiered by the composer at her sister's wedding during the lighting of the unity candle. The piece opens and closes with the Gregorian chant from the Introit of the Nuptial Mass (Tobias 7:15 and 8:19). The part of the chant that is used in Unity translates to "May the God of Israel join you together; and may He be with you."

    Original Latin Text:
    Deus Israel conjungat vos, et ipse sit vobiscum, qui misertus est duobus unicis: et nunc, Domine, fac eos plenius benedicere te. Ps. Beati omnes qui timent Dominum: qui ambulant in viis ejus.

    English Translation of Text:
    May the God of Israel join you together; and may he be with you, who took pity upon two only children: and now, O Lord, make them bless thee more fully. (Ps. 127:1) Blessed are all they that fear the Lord; that walk in his ways.

    Railroaded was composed for the 2015 Atlanta Flute Club School Honors Flute Choir under the direction of the composer. Atlanta is a hub of sorts for the rail system. No matter how hard the composer tried, she always found herself living within earshot of the railroad since moving to Georgia. It seems that most of the trains do most of their traveling at night blowing their horns as they pass through intersections or returning home. That persistant sound always present in the composers mind.

    The composer uses some extended techniques such as beat boxing and pitch bending to replicate the familiar sounds of the train on the tracks, blowing its horn.

    The Commute was commissioned by Tara Winds Clarinet Choir. The choir and the composer are both based in Atlanta, Georgia which is notorious for its terrible traffic. The traffic hour is more 3-4 hours in the the morning and the evening. A minor fender bender can bring traffic to a halt and destroy a commute. It makes getting around Atlanta an epic feat of strength, patience, and determination. This piece depicts the frustration in traveling in a city where sustaining any kind of travel speed is impossible.

    Acrophobia is the fear of heights, which is something the composer has been working on overcoming. They last couple of trips the composer took with Mary and Matthew have included trails at the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, and Chautauqua Park Trailhead, in Boulder, Colorado. The piece illustrates the anxiety and vertigo that the composer feels when she finds she has pushed herself out of her comfort zone.

    Acrophobia was commissioned by Matthew Angelo, Alyssa Hoffert, and Mary Matthews. Mary and Matthews have had an ongoing collaboration with the composer and performing with Alyssa Hoffert. This project brings the four together on a project for the first time.

  • Death Whistle was commissioned by Dr. Elizabeth Robinson. The piccolo is notorious in the orchestra for its incredibly high pitches, and gets a bad rap for intonation issues. It takes a brave soul to consider playing the piccolo and a person of questionable character to love it.

    The first movement, Ear Knife, spotlights the piccolo's ability to cut through with its razor sharp high notes.

    The second movement, Ballistophobia, is the fear of being shot. Every piccoloist knows the joke "How do you tune two piccolos? You shoot one".

    The final movement, #PiccolOhMyGod, which is the hastag used on Twitter by the composer and commissioner when discussing the woes of piccolo playing and composing. Let's hope everyone makes it out alive after this performance.

    Honorable Mention for the National Flute Association's 2019 Newly Published Music Competition for Piccolo category.

  • Mit modernen Spieltechniken.

    The piece is split into quarters and explores different areas of the historic French Quarter in New Orleans. The first movement opens the piece with its crowded Bourbon street. The second movement is the whirling powdered sugar that dances in the air on a windy day from tourists eating the beignets. The third movement echoes the music heard from the jazz institution known as Preservation Hall. Finally we exit the French Quarter being carried out by a Jazz Funeral to and from the St. Louis Cemetery where many a jazz legend is laid to rest. The piece makes use of some extended flute techniques, like beat boxing, in the hopes to replicate percussion, double bass sounds, and sometimes even wind to capture the atmosphere of the French Quarter.

    Premiered at the 2013 National Flute Association Convention in New Orleans by Perimeter Flutes!

  • Coalescence is comprised of two movements of opposite forces, Coagulation and Discombobulation. The first slow movement, Coagulation, gradually brings the harmonies of the strings to gravitate and finally end in unison on middle C. The second fast movement, Discombobulation, works to unravel the melody and rhythmic progression throwing different obstacles in the ensemble's path to keep from arriving the completion of the initial thought stated in the opening theme.

    This piece was originally orchestrated for string quartet, but it was recently arranged for flute quartet and premiered by Perimeter Flutes.

    "Chatter" is a flute duet which uses percussive extended technique such as beatboxing, flutter tonguring, pizzacato, and jet whistle to mimic incessant talk that is often shared between two people who have some exciting news to share. Each part seems to interject the others thought much like two friends who can finish each other's sentences. Like a conversation between two friends, the emotional tone changes as the piece progresses. Once the excitment of telling the news is shared there is reflection and debate over the news.     Acrophobia is the fear of heights, which is something the composer has been working on overcoming. They last couple of trips the composer took with Mary and Matthew have included trails at the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, and Chautauqua Park Trailhead, in Boulder, Colorado. The piece illustrates the anxiety and vertigo that the composer feels when she finds she has pushed herself out of her comfort zone.

    Acrophobia was commissioned by Matthew Angelo, Alyssa Hoffert, and Mary Matthews. Mary and Matthews have had an ongoing collaboration with the composer and performing with Alyssa Hoffert. This project brings the four together on a project for the first time.

    Capsaicin (2016) für zwei Flöten und Violoncello (Dauer ca 6'30''). Part/Sti.

    In botany, capsaicin is the part of the chili pepper that gives the addictive spicy burning sensation. Like in this piece, sometimes there is a slow burn effect that can build then linger when eating a spicy dish.

    Capsaicin was commissioned by flutist Kiku Ichihara, flutist Sonya Alexander, and cellist Lee Cortina. The trio had played the composer's works Trajectory and Stridulation and wanted another piece to enrich the rare instrumentation's repetoire.

    Honorable Mention in the 2018 National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition in the trios with other instruments category.
